The Marine Science Exhibit at Venice Pier: A Call for Volunteers
The Venice Oceanarium’s weekly Marine Science exhibit, located on the Venice Pier, is a beloved feature for both locals and tourists. The exhibit showcases a wide range of oceanographic displays, from rare specimens to shark jaws and historical artifacts. Visitors have the unique opportunity to participate as Citizen Scientists, conducting water testing, examining sand grains and seawater samples under microscopes, and expressing their appreciation for marine life through poetry and drawings.
The exhibit is currently in need of volunteers to assist with its Sunday operations. Volunteers are crucial for the setup and teardown of the exhibit, with specific times set as follows:
– 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. for setup
– 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. for teardown
Moreover, volunteers will receive comprehensive orientation over four Sundays, contributing from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. No marine biology degree is necessary; a deep love for the ocean and a sense of curiosity are the only prerequisites. The Venice Oceanarium adopts a layered learning approach, allowing volunteers to gradually absorb new information and expand their knowledge base with each session.
For those who are interested but not yet ready to commit, the Venice Oceanarium has published a two-part feature on World Ocean Day on Facebook and Instagram. This feature provides an inside look into the setup process for the Marine Science Pop-ups and sheds light on additional public activities and docent experiences. Volunteers also have the option to experience a trial day before making a commitment. For further details or to register, visit https://www.veniceoceanarium.org/get-involved-volunteer-sponsor.
