During a recent meeting in Beijing, Director Xia Baolong of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office acknowledged the efforts of the city’s environment bureau, recognizing that many of its tasks are important to the people. This acknowledgment came in the wake of the Hong Kong government’s decision to shelve a long-debated waste-charging scheme. Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan, who met with Xia, briefed him on the bureau’s progress towards carbon neutrality goals, green transition opportunities, environmental protection, ecological conservation, low-carbon energy, agricultural and fisheries development, as well as environmental hygiene and food safety.
Tse also discussed the potential for Hong Kong to collaborate with other Greater Bay Area cities in the development of green energy and related industries. The Greater Bay Area initiative aims to create an economic powerhouse by linking Hong Kong, Macau, and nine other cities in southern China.
