The upcoming 11th Commonwealth Sports Minister Meeting (11CSMM) in Paris, France, is ⁤set to build on the commitments made at⁤ the 10CSMM, focusing on key areas such as inclusion, youth⁢ development, health, education, enterprise, and capacity building.

Sports and Sustainable Development Goals

Sport is recognized as a valuable tool ⁤for promoting positive contributions to society. In⁤ fact, it is acknowledged⁢ in⁢ the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development‌ as an important enabler for⁢ achieving the Sustainable Development Goals⁣ (SDGs).

In ⁤collaboration with UNESCO, the Commonwealth Secretariat has developed the⁣ Global⁤ Sport ⁢and Sustainable Development Goals Impact Report, which aligns⁣ local, national, and international sport ‍policies and programs with the SDGs. These indicators are designed to help monitor ⁤the contribution of sport to various SDGs, including good health, quality education, gender equality, economic growth, reducing inequality, sustainable⁤ consumption, environmental sustainability, and safeguarding athletes from abuse and violence.

Following⁢ the 10CSMM, the Commonwealth Secretariat has been actively‍ involved in advancing the sport agenda‌ in⁣ these areas. For example, it has aided ‌members in ⁣developing ⁤National Sport Policies and providing guidance on how sport‍ can contribute to education, health, inclusion, and economic development.

Engagement at the Local Level

The Commonwealth ⁣Secretariat is currently working with The⁢ Gambia to develop a National Sport⁢ Policy that aligns with the SDGs. Local‍ sport stakeholders in The Gambia have expressed their desire to see a more caring and winning nation through sport, leading to the inclusion of initiatives such as safe-guarding, promoting the participation of women, girls, para-athletics, and the disabled in the draft of⁤ the National Sport Policy.

Furthermore, the⁢ Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games served as a tangible example of the SDGs Indicators and Kazan Action ‍Plan put into practice. The Games showcased economic growth, increased⁤ female participation in team sports, and the inclusion of para-athletes, all contributing to achieving the SDGs.

Promoting Inclusion

The ⁤appointment of Ms. Anne Wafula Strike MBE, PLY as⁤ the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy Champion for Equality in Sports has provided a‌ strong advocate for inclusion and creating opportunities ⁢for disabled individuals to participate in sports, ultimately accelerating societal development in line with the Sport ⁤and SDG ⁢indicators.

Earlier this year, the Commonwealth hosted ⁣the 8th Commonwealth Sport ‍Debate, where participants discussed the potential⁢ of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to⁢ accelerate‍ the power of sport in‍ achieving the SDGs by 2030. The Commonwealth Secretariat recognizes the‍ potential of AI‌ in the sports industry and its significant impact on economic growth.

Towards CHOGM

As we approach the‌ Commonwealth Heads‍ of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa ‌in October 2024, the⁣ 11CSMM aims to⁢ facilitate‌ consensus and cooperation ‍in implementing priority actions that will result in a Commonwealth united ⁢through sport, aligning with the wider policy agenda of⁤ ‘One Resilient Common Future’.
