Alongside his father and sibling, Toby co-authored works including Texas Lizards and Texas Amphibians.
He attained a bachelor’s degree specializing in biology from Midwestern State University; later earning both master’s credentials from Texas A&M focused on wildlife studies followed by a doctorate in animal ecology from Johannesburg’s University of Witwatersrand.
