New Leadership at the‍ Washington State Department of Ecology

Appointment for Climate Action
‍
Casey Sixkiller has‌ been designated by Governor-elect Bob Ferguson as⁤ the new leader of the Washington ⁤State Department of Ecology, reinforcing‌ the ⁤state’s‌ commitment to‍ addressing climate change. Currently serving as the⁤ regional administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ⁤(EPA), Sixkiller brings a wealth of experience to this ‍pivotal role, which oversees implementing Washington’s progressive environmental policies‌ introduced ‍under former Governor Jay Inslee. ⁢In a statement, Ferguson expressed⁤ confidence in Sixkiller’s ability to formulate effective ⁣solutions for intricate challenges that will be essential in advancing state initiatives.

Strategic Appointments Align⁢ with State Goals
In addition to Sixkiller’s appointment, Ferguson announced that Tim Lang—who has served as chief legal counsel and‍ part of the executive strategy team within‍ the⁣ Department of Corrections—will take over as its next secretary. Having worked closely with Ferguson during his time as attorney⁤ general, Lang is well-equipped ‍to navigate legal complexities in corrections and manage ongoing issues within state ⁤facilities. “His extensive legal knowledge combined with insight into institutional challenges makes him highly qualified for this position,” stated ‍Ferguson.

With⁣ these latest appointments, Ferguson has now filled six ‌leadership roles ahead of his official inauguration set for January 15.

Experience from Federal Service
Sixkiller was appointed by President Joe Biden ⁤in 2022 ‍and managed‌ EPA operations across Region 10, which includes not⁢ only Washington but also Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, and two hundred seventy-one tribal nations.‌ He will be succeeding Laura Watson who transitions into her‍ role⁤ as chief deputy attorney‍ general under ‌incoming Attorney General Nick Brown.

Prior to⁤ joining federal service at EPA, ⁣he ‍held important positions ‍such as deputy mayor of Seattle and chief operating officer in King County while being an enrolled member of Cherokee Nation—a facet that adds depth to his understanding regarding indigenous environmental concerns.

Former Governor‌ Inslee commended this valuable selection: “I’ve known ‍Casey for years and hold him⁣ in high esteem ‍personally and professionally. His successful tenure at EPA assures⁣ me he’ll continue advancing excellence at Ecology.”

Continuity⁢ Amid⁢ Change
While six department heads have been confirmed thus far by Ferguson—including decisions⁤ on Marcus Glasper‌ remaining‌ director at Licensing and ‌David⁤ Puente Jr.‍ staying on⁤ as ‌head⁣ of Veterans Affairs—he also acknowledges Cheryl Strange’s extension beyond her intended retirement plan; she will serve temporarily ⁣acting ‍secretary within ‍Social and‌ Health Services after⁤ previously leading ⁢it from 2017-2021.

Additionally, K.D. Chapman-See⁤ has been ‍appointed to⁤ head up Financial Management—a crucial role considering projections indicating a significant budget deficit looming over future state expenditures.

This shift towards ⁢a more robust ecological governance reflects both an urgency associated with climate issues facing not just‍ Washington but broader national priorities during these transformative times.
