Stranded in the Subway: A New York Commuter’s Unexpected Ordeal
Every New Yorker dreads the thought of being trapped underground on the subway. For many of the city’s 3.8 million daily travelers, minor delays are a common occurrence, lasting only a few seconds to a couple of minutes at most. However, on December 11th, around 5:40 p.m., I experienced something far more unsettling while boarding the F train at Bergen Street in Brooklyn to head back to Manhattan for dinner with my sister—a complete suspension of service.
This particular shutdown was unlike the usual brief halts that commuters often endure. Though lights illuminated our train car, an eerie silence enveloped us—it felt as if not even a whisper of air was circulating through either our compartment or the dim tunnel outside.
It soon became clear that power had been cut off entirely.
After several moments filled with uncertainty and growing discomfort among passengers, our conductor announced over the intercom, “We’re experiencing a third rail power outage. I’m currently unsure how we will proceed but I will keep you updated.”
The reactions were predictable—groans and exasperated sighs echoed around me—but most riders assumed service would resume shortly. Yet when another announcement followed five minutes later revealing that he still had no information and acknowledging how hot it was inside (“feel free to crack open some windows”), anxiety began to creep into our collective mindset. Was this just an inconvenience or something more serious?
With limited communication options due to lack of cell service and internet access below ground, it wasn’t long before my imagination took hold—I half expected this event to unfold like one of those disaster thrillers starring Julia Roberts streaming on Netflix right now titled Leave the World Behind.
In an effort to distract myself from escalating anxiety levels, I pulled up Block Blast on my phone—courtesy of my son’s recent recommendation—and began playing what turned out to be an addictive digital puzzle game reminiscent of Tetris.
As moments stretched into tensely quiet minutes onboard our stalled train amid stifling heat from packed bodies and heavy rain outside creating oppressive humidity levels inside increased unease amongst fellow passengers became evident.
A woman nearby asked desperately if anyone had water; alas no one did—but she soon engaged her seatmate in conversation—a small relief for both as simply talking helped soothe their nerves.
Then came a request from our conductor over overhead speakers seeking medical personnel aboard after we heard panic-stricken cries from another passenger experiencing distress (a kind man suspecting himself as medically trained made his way forward).
Eventually breaking points arrived—the stirrings prompted some brave souls attempting escape by navigating between cars onto dark emergency pathways along metal tracks buried beneath city streets. Our conductor urged us emphatically too stay put stating firmly yet humorously “Please stay! Trust me—you don’t want go wandering out there in darkness filled with rats and who knows what!”
Laughter erupted throughout crowded compartments momentarily dissipating worries; surely everyone believed him when he mentioned rodents lurking just beyond sight!
Amidst ongoing comical exchanges iced with eeriness courtesy MTA’s articulate communicator offering intermittent updates about conditions—which seemed increasingly absurd—our conductor cannot have possibly lacked means tracking situation above ground could he?
Finally came relief expressed collectively through cheers upon hearing firefighters were mobilizing rescue efforts; we were instructed toward rear exits leading down narrow passageways alongside dried safety regions where MTA employees awaited guiding frantic commuters toward awakening stairs leading back towards daylight!
Once clarity returned during escalations among strangers forming bonds caused by shared adversity conversations blossomed easily amid lighter moods making slow progress escape route memorable.
