A New Chapter in a Timeless Tale: Stephen King and Maurice Sendak Reimagine Hansel and Gretel
Two literary giants, Stephen King and Maurice Sendak, have breathed new life into a cherished story—despite having never met each other.
The Revitalization of a Classic
Set to be released on September 2, 2025, their rendition of the Grimm Brothers’ Hansel and Gretel promises to captivate both old fans and new readers alike. Originally featured in Grimm’s Fairy Tales back in 1812, this iconic narrative follows two brave siblings as they traverse a foreboding forest before encountering a malevolent witch with dark designs.
Maurice Sendak once reflected on the profound nature of this tale during an interview in 1997: “Hansel and Gretel is the most significant among all Grimm fairy tales. While many of these stories convey themes of heroism among children, Hansel and Gretel stand atop as epitomes thereof… It embodies fear yet resonates because it carries an undeniable truth.”
The Creative Minds Behind the Project
Sendak (1928-2012) was not only an acclaimed author but also an illustrator renowned for his works such as Where the Wild Things Are, which continues to enchant audiences today. He earned accolades like the Caldecott Medal for his contributions to children’s literature. His legacy paved the way for this innovative adaptation through The Maurice Sendak Foundation.
On the other hand, Stephen King has long been celebrated as a leading figure in horror fiction. With monumental works like The Shining, It, and Pet Sematary that have transitioned into hit films, King boasts an impressive catalogue comprising over 65 novels across various genres including crime, sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery.
Lynn Caponera from The Maurice Sendak Foundation expressed her admiration for this unique collaboration between two illustrious authors: “The blend of talents between King and Sendak is simply remarkable. Both are giants in their respective fields. Mr. King’s adaptation beautifully captures what we know from Maurice’s work.”
Inspiration Behind the Narrative
King shared his exhilaration at joining forces with Sendak stating how certain illustrations resonated deeply with him: “One image depicted the wicked witch soaring on her broomstick alongside abducted children; another featured that infamous gingerbread house transformed into a menacing visage.” He elaborated further on what inspired him to encapsulate these darker undertones: “The house truly reveals itself only when children turn away—a reflection of innocence confronted by evil.”
He went on to express how this story encapsulates recurrent themes throughout fairytales—an outwardly inviting facade concealing something sinister within—and highlights resourceful youth facing daunting challenges head-on.
