On Sunday, October ⁤27, a spirited gathering in New York City’s Washington Square Park took an unexpected turn when the police intervened to shut ‍down a Timothée Chalamet lookalike competition.⁣ The event⁤ was ‍organized ⁤by fans who had promoted it through⁤ eye-catching ⁢posters throughout ‌the city.

Reports⁢ from NBC New York indicated⁣ that⁢ as ⁣many as⁣ several ⁢hundred enthusiasts⁣ assembled⁢ near the park’s iconic arch around 1‌ PM, many embracing various personas inspired by Chalamet’s ‍notable roles. Participants sported costumes ‌reminiscent ⁤of his characters including Willy ⁣Wonka from Wonka and ‍Bob Dylan‌ featured in⁤ his upcoming biopic A ⁢Complete Unknown.

In an‌ unexpected twist, Chalamet himself made a surprise appearance at ‌this unofficial⁤ contest, ⁤delighting attendees. Video footage released by both the Associated Press and⁤ excited fans⁣ on⁤ social⁤ media captured⁢ him waving to supporters and‍ posing ⁣for photographs amid the jubilant‍ chaos.

Despite this enthusiasm, law⁢ enforcement officers from the New ‌York Police Department soon arrived on-site to⁤ disperse ‍what they deemed an unauthorized gathering. A spokesperson for the ⁢NYPD informed NBC ‍that at least‌ one individual was detained during ⁤this incident,‌ with reports suggesting ⁢that ⁢one⁣ of the event organizers ‍may have been arrested.

Footage shared online reveals police using sirens and announcing through‍ megaphones that participants would be issued summonses⁣ if they did ⁣not disperse promptly.

Even with police presence looming large, lookalike contestants‌ attempted to proceed ⁣with their competition; some⁢ paraded ⁢through crowds showcasing their best impressions of ‌Chalamet. Ultimately, a fan donned in‍ a vibrant‍ Willy ‍Wonka ⁢costume was declared victoriously crowned as winner—although it remains‍ unclear whether they received the ⁣promised $50 grand prize.

This isn’t ‌an isolated‌ incident; Manhattan has witnessed other fan-driven events meet similar ⁣fates recently ⁤due to‍ law enforcement‍ intervention.

Previous Police Intervention at Fan Events

For instance, back in⁤ August 2023, Twitch streamer Kai Cenat invited fans for an extravagant giveaway featuring high-demand items like gaming consoles ⁢and accessories at Union ⁤Square Park. However, thousands ⁢congregated creating substantial unrest leading to claims from police about injuries sustained among ⁣officers present due to unruly behavior within the crowd—ultimately resulting in 60 arrests including 30 minors associated with ⁤disturbances stemming from Cedat’s event gathering.

Cenat‍ faced serious charges initially but saw⁣ those allegations dropped by May⁢ when Manhattan District ⁣Attorney’s Office decided against pursuing ‍further legal action ‌against‌ him ⁤following extensive review of circumstances surrounding‍ that day’s events.
